Healthy Opportunities Pilot: A Lifeline for North Carolina
In a state where health outcomes can often parallel economic stability, North Carolina's Healthy Opportunities Pilot (HOP) emerges as a beacon of hope. Over the past three years, HOP has transformed the lives of more than 34,000 residents, utilizing Medicaid funds to enhance access to necessities such as nutritious food, safe housing, and reliable transportation. This program has not only improved individual health outcomes but has also invigorated our local economies, particularly in Western North Carolina (WNC).
Economic Impact: Strengthening Local Farms
The integration of HOP with local farms has created a ripple effect that benefits the entire WNC community. With over $24 million invested in more than 400 local farms and food businesses, the program has facilitated the purchase of fresh foods through food boxes and innovative fruit and vegetable prescriptions for beneficiaries. Impressively, 92% of HOP participants' food referrals are sourced from local agriculture, which not only supports farmers but also stabilizes cash flow throughout the year, vital for those facing seasonal vulnerabilities.
Job Creation and Economic Resilience
HOP’s impact extends beyond health and farming; it has also spurred job creation across various sectors like construction, trades, and human services. In WNC alone, the pilot program has delivered over 376,000 essential HOP services. This has given rise to job opportunities for local residents, highlighting the interconnectedness of health initiatives and economic strength.
Health Care Savings: A Long-Term Investment
According to a study from the Sheps Center at the University of North Carolina, the HOP program has significantly reduced healthcare costs, achieving an estimated savings of $1,020 per participant annually within just two years. As the program continues to evolve, these savings are expected to grow, presenting a strong argument for sustained investment and continued support from state budgets.
The Urgent Need for Continued Support
Yet, despite its proven success, HOP is currently excluded from the proposed North Carolina House and Senate budgets for the upcoming fiscal years. The absence of funding could lead to dire consequences: rural economies would suffer, emergency visits might rise, healthcare costs could soar, and the health of countless individuals would be at risk. The notion that "Health is wealth" is not merely a phrase; it underscores the link between individual health, community success, and economic stability.
Get Involved: Advocate for HOP
As Asheville citizens, it is essential to act—they cannot afford to lose such a transformative program. Engaging with local representatives about the significance of HOP for North Carolina's health and economic prosperity is crucial. Advocating for HOP ensures not just a healthier population, but a sturdier local economy which benefits everyone.
As Laurie Stradley, CEO of Impact Health, aptly put it, "HOP works, and it is worthy of continued investment." It’s time to unite and make our voices heard.
